Throughout my martial arts career, I've worried that I was too old to make it to black belt. But the fact that I am here now, after five years and more birthdays, feeling better physically and mentally than I have in years, lets me know that I have succeeded. .....After two years of competing in tournaments, I managed a few first place awards, several second place and a few third place medals. I won some of the medals at state tournaments. I am most proud of my second place medal from the USSSA State Tournament in sparring. That was the first tournament where I sparred and I was very proud of my performance. I have also placed second in the AAU State Tournament. I am just as proud of the third place awards as I am of the first place awards. I know that each time I gave my best and that makes any award I win special to me. Taekwondo has taught me to give your best and you will succeed..... .....exerpt taken from black belt report 4/2007 |
| It has also changed some of my attitudes and how I deal with life stresses. It has helped me become more centered. Taking taekwondo has made me more confident about who I am and about my abilities. I have learned that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. |
| WHAT TAEKWONDO HAS MEANT TO ME By John Winkler As a child, I loved watching Bruce Lee movies. I was fascinated with the way he moved and fought. So my interest in martial arts goes back a long way. My first-hand experience with taekwondo started about thirty years ago when I learned they were giving classes at Miami University and I started taking them. Unfortunately, I had to withdraw just before my first test. I got interested again in taekwondo in 2002. My greanddaughter was taking classes in Hamilton and we would go to watch her. I began to think that maybe I could get back into learning taekwondo. I was also interested in taking the classes so that I could spend time with my granddaughter, who seemed to be having fun and was learning something I had been interest in so many years before. I never imagined that five years later I would have worked my way toward achieving my own black belt. After taking classes for about two years, I decided that I wanted to step up the level of my training. I wanted more discipline and to compete in tournaments. So about three years ago, I enrolled at Oxford Martial Arts. I found the discipline for which I was looking. After the first year of taking taekwondo, I lost eighty-two pounds and felt better than I had in years. TKD has taught me alot about myself. It did more than just help me lose weight. It helped me to be more disciplined in the way I eat. I eat healthier now and I'm more aware of how food affects my body. My cholesterol was out of control, and taekwondo helped lower my numbers. It helped me to strengthen my ailing back and to focus better. |
